Survival gear is basicly SIMPLE, as long as you keep it simple, it wont confuse you.
Here Are a Few Items Of Real Importance
1. A Good Emergency Radio
(C.Crane Radio Equiptment)
CC Solar Observer (Black) $49.95
The CC Solar Observer is a C. Crane-designed, wind-up emergency radio with AM/FM and Weather Band. We made sure that it has good AM reception and an LED flashlight that is built into the end of the radio.
Midland Base Camp Radio (XT511) $89.95
The Midland XT511 Base Camp Radio is a 22 channel 2-way radio that can be used to communicate with any other FRS or GMRS type of walkie-talkies. It has the ability to encode your chosen frequency with one of 121 CTCSS/DCS codes. By selecting one of these codes you will only hear those other stations that you want to hear and not be interrupted by other users on the same channel. This makes it a very versatile radio to be used both during emergency situations and for camping and other outdoor activities. By turning off the codes, you will be able to you to keep in touch with your neighborhood disaster center and other neighbors during an emergency and be assured that you will receive all important calls.
NON EMERGENCY RADIO - but good shortwave radios
CC SW Pocket $49.95
In a true testament to its quality and performance, the modestly priced CC SW Pocket has been voted "Best Travel Radio under $200.00" by Passport to World Band Radio. Our CC SW Pocket AM/FM/Shortwave Radio has exceptional AM reception and audio quality and is sensitive enough to outperform all comparable radios in its class. And it's still small enough to tuck in your briefcase, purse or carryon bag.CCRADIO SW $124.95
The CCRadio-SW AM/FM/Shortwave Radio is a powerhouse, portable radio from C. Crane. Thanks to the built-in Twin Coil Ferrite® AM Antenna, this masterful radio has AM reception in the same class as the legendary CCRadios. It also delivers outstanding FM, and – here's the big news – Shortwave! This radio offers the best combination of sensitivity, selectivity and audio performance for any radio of this size. Shortwave is excellent right off the whip antenna. The five-inch speaker is accurate, pleasant and reproduces deeper bass than any portable of similar size.
ATS-909X AM/FM/SW RECIEVER (Black) $249.95
The new Sangean ATS-909X has a long history and the new model is a winner at a fair price. There are a lot of shortwave radios available but relatively few with Single Side Band capability. The government and Ham operators transmit emergency and other communications on SSB because the radio waves travel further on less power.
SHORTWAVE RADIO ANTENNA
CC SW Real Antenna $19.95
The CC SW Reel Antenna is a convenient and inexpensive way to improve the reception of any shortwave radio. Just attach the end clip to the telescoping antenna of your radio and extend the antenna up the wall or to a window. Comes in a sturdy case for portability. Size: 4" W x 2.9" H x 0.8" D.
Kaito KA-33 Shortwave Loop Antenna $54.95
Go beyond the shortwave reception of your radio's whip antenna. The compact Kaito KA-33 Shortwave Active Loop Antenna tested best among indoor world-band antennas. This portable marvel hangs from a window or a curtain and attaches directly to a 1/8" ANT jack or easily clips to your radio's existing antenna. Frequency range: SW 3.9 - 22 MHz. Enhances the shortwave reception of any desktop or portable radio. The included ferrite bar antenna coupler can improve regular AM in some cases. Runs on two "AAA" size batteries (not included). For indoor use only.
NOTE -
A good combination, of a Shortwave Radio and a Emergency Radio would do you well.
Some come with an LED light, some don't...........Do your research.
C.Crane is a well known Quality Radio Equiptment Provider.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS - Tennis Shoes;
in an Emergency Type Situation
Written by Tony Baja
04/07/2012
For women an advisable Emergency Type Situation necessity, from what I have seen, is the need for a pair of tennis shoes in the trunk of your car, along with a small pair of socks.
In an Earthquake Type Situation, if you are stranded on the freeway, and you must leave your car, and walk, you probably would much rather have a pair of tennis shoes handy, especially if there is broken glass, or broken asphalt. A pair of spike heels might look nice, but you probably would end up taking them off, and walking barefoot, and the glass alone would most likely Stop You.
A spare mini flashlight Economy Type, would also be nice to have in your trunk, just in case it was night time......with a pair of tennis shoes on, and a flashlight in the palm of your closed fist pointing the light, from the back of your hand/palm, while your hand is upward close to your head, not too close.
Even if this light is off, and you are walking with your hands at your side, you can easily put your hand up, as a guard, with your thumb on the on off button, and instantly render someone defenseless, while they would not have a clue (until now).
You should also put in a reasonable sized bottle of drinking water, just in case of an Earthquake Type Situation, or Emergency Type Situation, and you need to walk.

Calcium Bentonite Clay in an Emergency
by Tony Baja
04/21/2012
Calcium Bentonite Clay (CBC) has many, many uses. This article is about earthquake preparedness equiptment, to be used in cases of emergency. Reports show that CBC has a therapeutic quality that promotes healing. That an electrical magnetic property attracts toxins - 7th paragraph
While other reports show "There are very compelling reports of clay treating infections, but that's anecdotal evidence, not science. They would mix clay with water and make a paste and put it on the horrible wounds," said Lynda Williams, an associate research professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, Tempe. This is reported here at Articles About Clay
While other reports that when water is applied to clay, the clay will expand in some cases, to 3 times is dry size, and remain somewhat porous, and absorb toxins (first link)
One report shows the use of CBC for the exterior treatment of insect bites, while this article reports on how CBC works, in part.
One article reports on the expansion of clay, which could possibly be used, in an emergency type situation, without any access to a hospital, if CBC is applied dry powder form, to a puncture wound, open gash wound (bullet or knife wound possibly), whereas stopping the bleeding is one of the most important issues to survive. Then packing the wound, with dry clay, would expand inside the wound, and stop the bleeding. What do I mean by emergencies paragraph 13 - "What do I mean by emergencies? This material is used to patch dams. If you cut your leg with a chainsaw, powdered bentonite will help stop the bleeding."
Some reports show using CBC on open wounds to heal, but in any case CBC should be a part of an emergency preparedness equiptment supply, in my opinion. Always remember seek expert medical treatment as a priority.
Once again, Tony Baja does NOT use clay as recommended by many websites, Tony Baja seldom uses clay.
